How to choose a reel size2500 vs C3000: 5g apart, 3x+ the line capacity

Home › Buying guides › How to choose a reel size

For your first reel, choose a size on the 2500 body: the C3000 from Shimano, or the Regalis LT2500D from Daiwa. The Stradic C3000 is only 5g heavier than the 2500S but holds more than 3x the PE #1.

The Gear Nerd's Pick

What the size number tells you is the spool size, not the body size. On the Stradic, the 2500S and C3000 share the same 47mm spool and differ by 5g. So rather than how big the number is, I first look at which body the spool sits on.

Skip the reasons and see the gear first ↓

Key points

  • Spool diameter runs from 43mm on the C2000S to 52mm on the 4000
  • The 2500S and C3000 share 47mm, with a 5g weight gap
  • C2500S → 2500S adds 35g; C3000 → 4000 adds 50g

Sizes 2500 and C3000 differ by just 5g

On the Shimano Stradic, the 2500S weighs 220g and the C3000 225g. A 5g gap. Yet PE #1 capacity is 120m on the 2500S and 400m on the C3000.

The number is 500 higher, yet the weight is almost the same. That surprised me. If you judge size by the number alone, this is where you get confused.

How I see it

First I looked at spool diameter and weight for each size. Then I searched the table for which sizes share the same spool diameter.

What tempted me was the C2500S at a light 185g. Honestly, it caught my eye.

Still, for a first reel I recommend a size on the 2500 body. Those are the sizes that cover all-round use from bass to saltwater.

Three rules are enough to choose a reel size

  • If unsure, the 2500 body: Shimano 2500S / C3000, Daiwa LT2500 to LT3000-C
  • For light lures and thin line, one body down (Shimano C2000S / C2500S)
  • For surf and blue-water fish, 4000 and up. Weight goes up by about 50g

Where to draw the lines is simple: I lined up, size by size, the "what fishing it is for" from both makers' official pages.

Reel size quick chart: a guide by method

With the eye of a certified fishing instructor with 30 years of fishing, eging and jigging included, where people get stuck on size is not how big the number is but the thickness and length of line they spool. I lined up the uses the makers give in each size description and the line rating of the rods.

Sizes are the uses Shimano (Stradic) and Daiwa (23 Regalis) give in each size description. PE figures are the line ratings of rods compared on this site (6 aji rods, 6 eging rods, 6 sea bass 96ML rods, 5 shore jigging 10 ft M rods) and the line capacity listed for the Stradic 2500S and Light Game X. Spool diameter grows from 43mm to 52mm in the order of the size numbers. Shimano describes the C2000S as a 2000-size spool on a 1000-size body and rotor.

The 3000MHG is the reverse: a 2500-size spool on a 4000-size body.

In other words, the number is the spool. Unless you look at the leading C or the letters after the number, you can't tell the body size.

How many grams does one step up in body add?

Subtract the weight steps and you can see where the body changes. The table numbers alone tell you.

C2500S → 2500S: 220 − 185 = 35g. The spool gets 3mm wider.
2500S → C3000: 225 − 220 = 5g. Same 47mm spool.
C3000 → 4000: 275 − 225 = 50g. The spool gets 5mm wider.

At the 5g step, spool diameter and stroke (17mm) are the same; only the spool depth changes. Shimano says the 3000MHG spool is interchangeable with the 2500 and C3000.

The 35g and 50g steps are where the body itself changes. When I choose a size, these steps are what I look at first.

2500 vs C3000: spool depth and drag

Even with the same 47mm spool, the 2500S has 4kg max drag and the C3000 9kg. More than double. PE is listed as #0.6–1 for the 2500S and #1–2 for the C3000, so the band of line thickness they hold is shifted.

Shimano introduces the 2500S as "the first model to pick for bass fishing" and the C3000 as an all-rounder from freshwater to saltwater. The 2500S for light lures on thin line, the C3000 to use one reel up to thicker line. No need to agonize here.

The dividing line is PE #1. The 2500S holds only 120m of #1. If you want 150m of #1, take the C3000; if 150m of #0.8 is enough, the 2500S.

A bigger size retrieves more per crank at the same gear ratio

The length retrieved per crank is roughly spool diameter × 3.14 × gear ratio. For the C2000S at 5.1: 43 × 3.14 × 5.1 = about 69cm, matching the official 69cm.

The 2500S, also 5.1, gets about 75cm with its 47mm spool. The 4000, with a 52mm spool and 5.3 gear ratio, gets about 87cm. All match the official table.

Going up one size also speeds up the retrieve. That is why a smaller size suits slow retrieves of light lures.

Daiwa follows the same pattern. LT2500D to LT3000D-C adds 5g; from the LT3000-CXH at 200g to the LT4000-CXH adds 25g. That is the big step.

At the same size, gear ratio changes the retrieve per crank

Once the size is set, next is gear ratio. The Stradic C3000 retrieves 75cm and the C3000XG 94cm: 19cm apart on the same spool. I calculated this gap from the official numbers in Reel gear ratios explained.

Which models are lightest and cheapest in the 2500 band is ranked, with reasons, in the spinning reel size 2500 / C3000 ranking.

A 3000-size yaen reel is covered in the 26 Aorimatic BR LT review. An ester-line rod for area trout is covered in the Presso AIR AGS 61ML-E review.

Who is it for?

  • Anglers whose 2500 lacks line capacity and who are wondering whether to size up
  • Anglers who want to compare sizes by weight and spool numbers

If you only want more drag, a C3000 with the same spool diameter is enough. If your current 2500 gives you no trouble, keep it.

FAQ

Should I buy a 2500 or a C3000?

If you use line thicker than PE #1, the C3000. On the Stradic the weight gap is 5g, while PE #1 capacity is 120m vs 400m.

What does the "C" in a reel size mean?

Shimano's Stradic descriptions call the C2000S a 2000-size spool on a 1000-size body, and the C5000XG a compact 5000.

Are the same sizes the same physical size at Shimano and Daiwa?

Compare by weight rather than the size number. The Daiwa Regalis LT2500D weighs 190g and the Shimano Stradic C3000 225g; when comparing, look at weight and line capacity.

Do reel "size" and the size number mean the same thing?

Yes. Reel size is shown by the size number, and the number is the spool size. On the Stradic, the spool grows from 43mm on the C2000S to 52mm on the 4000.

What size reel for eging?

Sizes 2500–3000. Daiwa lists the Regalis LT2500S-XH and LT3000D-C as eging models.

What size reel for shore jigging?

Sizes 4000–6000. With the 26 BG SW, the 5000-H and 6000 suit shore fishing.
