The 26 Kaimei (26 model) is Shimano's all-round boat rod, released in Japan in Sep 2026. If unsure, take the 50-240: sinkers No. 30–100, 163g, list price JPY 36,500 (excl. tax).
The Gear Nerd's Pick
The core of the Kaimei is that it goes all in on "hard to break, few tangles" rather than sensitivity. The tubular tip was redesigned from the ground up, and the guides are tilted to prevent tangles. So I choose the 50-240 as the first rod for anglers who ride many different boats.
Key points
- Released Sep 2026. JPY 34,000–39,500 (excl. tax)
- 8 rods: three sinker classes (No. 30, 50, 80) × lengths

How I judged it
With the eye of someone with 30 years of fishing and a boat license, the biggest headache with boat rods is tip trouble. Line tangles on a rocking boat. The line wraps and the tip breaks. Either one ends your day.
The Kaimei fixes exactly that, head on. That is to its credit. The tip is an easy-to-handle, strong carbon tubular, redesigned from the ground up from the previous model to resist breaking even when the line wraps unexpectedly. The guides are tilted LDB guides, aimed at greatly reducing tangles on windy days. The tip-top ring is also bigger, making threading easier.
Of the eight, the 50-240 handles sinkers No. 30–100 and covers red sea bream, inada and warasa yellowtail, olive flounder, chicken grunt, hairtail, tilefish and horse mackerel. The widest range. This is my pick. A buy.

- Tip: the tubular tip design was rethought from the ground up for more stable strength
- Guides: tilted LDB guides and a large-diameter tip-top
- Reel seat: Fitting Support 18CI4+, easy to grip and less likely to hit the rod holder
- Grip: two EVA holds for the rod holder, and a newly shaped rear grip that is easy to tuck under your arm
The white-painted tip with bright vermilion thread is a thoughtful detail: even on days when waves rock the boat or clouds darken the water, small tip movements are easier to follow by eye. A nice touch.
The reel seat fits everything from small manual reels to 3000-class electric reels. An easy-to-tighten long nut holds even big reels firmly.
What does "from 7:3 to 6:4" mean?
On a boat rod, "7:3" means an action that bends about 30% down from the tip. The smaller the left number, the closer the bend moves to the butt; at 6:4 or 5:5 the whole rod curves in a smooth arc.
The Kaimei is based on a 7:3 action that makes jigging and hooksets easy, but bends smoothly down to 6:4 once a fish is on. The whole rod absorbs sudden runs, aiming to lose fewer fish. Easy to work until the hookup, then it holds on. One rod with the character you want in an all-rounder.
How many grams does 30cm more length add?
For the three No. 50-class rods, I calculated the weight and price gap per 30cm of length.
| The two rods compared | Weight gap | Price gap |
|---|---|---|
| 50-210 → 50-240 | 163 − 150 = 13g | JPY 1,500 |
| 50-240 → 50-270 | 173 − 163 = 10g | JPY 1,500 |
| 30-240 → 50-240 | 163 − 156 = 7g | JPY 1,000 |
A small gap: 30cm more adds only 10–13g. You do not need to choose length by weight; decide by boat size and method. On a crowded party boat, 2.1m; for waiting with the rod in a holder, 2.7m. The 2.4m in between is the most versatile.

Shimano's all-round boat rods also include the Mid Game, which attacks with lightness and sensitivity. The Kaimei is positioned as the classic all-rounder, putting first that you can use it with confidence for years in seas all over Japan.
For delicate fishing with light rigs, the Mid Game. To cover everything with one rod for years, the Kaimei. That is how I split them. Simple.

This part is so-so. If lightness and sensitivity come first, a more aggressive rod suits some situations better. On a boat, wear a life jacket and check your equipment against Japan Coast Guard guidance.
Who is the 26 Kaimei for?
- Anglers new to boat fishing who want one rod for many fish (50-240)
- Anglers mostly doing lighter fishing such as chicken grunt, horse mackerel and crimson sea bream (No. 30 class)
- Anglers doing heavier fishing such as yellowtail, yellowtail amberjack, rosy seabass or night squid (No. 80 class)
