The 26 Seaborg 150J (Seaborg 150J) is a small electric reel from Daiwa released in September 2026. It holds PE #1.5 for 300m at 385g, and lists at JPY 106,800 (excl. tax). A buy for light game from a boat when you work the bait by hand.

The Gear Nerd's Pick

The heart of the 150J is a spool for 300m of #1.5 on a body that weighs about the same 385g as the 100J. You can go up one line size while keeping the weight down, so a full day of working the bait by hand is less tiring and you do not have to force the line size. That is why I pick it as the first reel for electric light game.

Key points

  • Released Sep 2026. JPY 106,800 (excl. tax)
  • 385g, PE #1.5 for 300m, 7.5kg drag
  • 105g lighter than the 200J, with a 20% smaller volume

When is the Seaborg 150J out, and what does it cost?

It goes on sale in September 2026. List price is JPY 106,800 (excl. tax), and there are two models: the right-handle 150J and the left-handle 150JL. The 150J is built on the 100J, sized to hold 300m of PE #1.5 while keeping the weight down.

As listed on Daiwa's official Japanese pages on Oct 18, 2026 (the Seaborg 150J product specs, and the recommended-target list for the 100, 150 and 200 sizes). The 150J list price is JPY 106,800 (excl. tax).

How I judged it

As someone who likes reading spec sheets side by side, the first thing I lined up was the gap to the 100J. Weight rises by just 10g, yet the PE it holds goes up a step from #1 to #1.5. Drag also rises from 7kg to 7.5kg. A good 10g.

What I weighed was the 200J. The 200J has a strong 10kg of drag. Still, it weighs 490g, 105g more than the 150J. If you work hairtail or tai rubber by hand all day, that 105g tells. It is a weight difference your arm remembers.

I decided. My pick is the 150J. If I were choosing a first reel for electric light game, I would buy this. No hesitation.

How does it differ from the 100J and 200J?

The 150J is a size that fills the gap between the 100J's lightness and the 200J's line capacity. Compared with the 200J, its weight is 21% lower and its body volume 20% smaller. It is a slim shape with no visible screws, and sits in your hand together with the rod. Paired with a rod using Daiwa's ZERO SEAT or AIR SENSOR SEAT, the small body and slim reel seat become one in your hand, a design put together to raise sensitivity.

The handle shape differs too. The 100J has a 110mm double handle, but the 150J has a 65mm single handle with an aluminum round knob. It is a shape made with hand-winding and fighting a fish in mind. You can put power into it.

The cord is light too. The included AIR cord is 135g, 115g lighter than the 250g power cord. Added to the reel, it comes to 385 + 135 = 520g.

What does the JOG Power Lever change?

The dial in the middle of the body decides the winding speed. With one thumb of the hand holding the rod, you can both wind and engage or disengage the clutch. Your free hand can go to working the rod. You can focus on the presentation.

The 150J's dial is a new shape, with angled aluminum ridges that catch the pad of your thumb. It is easy to turn even with wet fingers or gloves. That is welcome.

The clutch and motor are linked. Release the clutch and the motor stops; engage it and it starts winding at the speed you set. You can answer a bite during the fall right away by winding.

Why can it wind slowly?

The answer is the motor. The heart is the MAGMAX motor. It uses a special neodymium magnet and is built to produce strong torque even at low rotation speeds.

That is why, with a No. 50 tenya, you can wind slowly from lever value 1 (with a 13–16.8V power supply). For hairtail tenya or tai rubber, you can leave the slow retrieve to the motor. I see this as the 150J's biggest strength. An electric reel that lets you lower the speed one notch at a time widens the range of presentations itself.

Can I set it from a smartphone?

Yes. It supports "Electric Mobile Setting" in the DAIWA app, and you can send line length entry, maintenance and function settings from your smartphone.

The screen on the reel is a dot LCD. The characters are large and easy to read even with polarized glasses. It also has a depth alarm that tells you the depth with a sound every 10m. You can tell how far the rig has dropped without looking at the counter. Plain, but a function that works in hand-held fishing.

The drag sound is electronic, with 3 choices: high, medium and low. You can also turn it off. Pick to taste.

How much does it wind by hand?

It takes up 54cm per handle turn, with a gear ratio of 5.1. Winding 100m by hand is 100 ÷ 0.54 = about 185 turns. Not many. The gear is the HYPERDRIVE DIGIGEAR, designed to keep a smooth winding feel for a long time.

On electric power, the normal winding speed under a 1kg load is 130m/min (with 13V). Winding up 100m works out to 100 ÷ 130 × 60 = about 46 seconds. Fast. The bearings are 13 ball and 1 roller.

Things to watch

This part is so-so. Drag is 7.5kg, short of the 200J's 10kg. If many of your days are electric jigging for big yellowtail, a size of 200J or above fits better.

Watch the power supply. It is 12–16.8V DC. It cannot run on household 100V AC or a boat's 24V DC. It is also built so a rod clamp cannot be attached, so it suits hand-held fishing more than fishing with the rod in a holder.

Who is the Seaborg 150J for?

  • Anglers who work hairtail tenya, tenbin rigs or tai rubber by hand
  • Anglers who want to make ika metal and light jigging easier with electric power too
  • Anglers who want to wind with the left hand: the 150JL (same numbers and price as the right)

If deep-water heavy rigs are your main fishing, you could also start from the size 500 Leobritz 500J review. The PE thickness to wind on is collected in how to choose PE line sizes.

Release dates for other new gear are in the fishing gear release calendar.
