The Morethan Burst Upper 180F is a floating sea bass lure Daiwa released in September 2026. It is 180mm and 60.5g, with a list price of JPY 3,500 (excl. tax). A buy if you work the surface for fish on big baitfish.

The Gear Nerd's Pick

The heart of the 180F is the small backflow made by its thick, cut-off tail. A plain slow retrieve makes the body wobble erratically, leaving a wake and spray on the surface. That is why I pick it as the one to run on a straight retrieve in big-bait season.

Key points

  • Released Sep 2026. The 180F is JPY 3,500 (excl. tax)
  • 180mm, 60.5g. Average test cast 60.0m
  • Only the 180F wobbles with a thick tail

When is the Burst Upper 180F out, and what does it cost?

It goes on sale in Sep 2026. List price is JPY 3,500 (excl. tax). It is the biggest size in the Burst Upper line, added after the 110F that came out in Apr 2026.

It is 180mm and 60.5g, a floater (F), and it swims from the surface to just below it. The hook is #2 and the ring is #4. There are 8 colors. It has a commanding body.

How I judged it

With 30 years of fishing, a boat license and a fishing instructor certification, the first thing I looked at was who supervised it. It is supervised by Masaya Onuma, and his name lives on in the "Onuma Special" colors.

Next I looked at what only the 180F has. The tail is cut off thick to create a small backflow that makes the body wobble erratically. The aim is a splash pencil that draws fish on a plain retrieve, and the biggest body puts it into shape.

The one thing I weighed was the 140F. Even so, to work the surface for fish on big baitfish, the 180F is my pick, and the doubt is gone. My judgment is that the size of the silhouette gives an answer no other size can.

As listed on Daiwa's official Japanese page on Oct 18, 2026. List prices exclude tax. Cast distances are the maker's own test values; the maximum is 50.0m for the 80F, 56.5m for the 110F, 57.0m for the 140F and 63.0m for the 180F.

I worked out the weight gap. The 180F is 60.5 ÷ 30.5 = about 2.0 times the 140F. Even so, the average cast gains only 60.0 − 55.4 = 4.6m. It is not a size for distance. It is a size for being seen.

The weight is there to keep a large body stable on the surface. That is how I read it. The reason to pick the 180F is its silhouette, not its distance.

What do the weight transfer and level posture do?

All four Burst Upper sizes use a weight transfer system. It is a common way to keep even a large, light-bodied lure flying true: the internal weight slides back on the cast to steady the lure in the air, then returns to the swimming position when it lands.

In the water, how the weight sits keeps the body level. The strength is that it can float level when you stop or let it drift. The head is flat with a cup in the mouth, which throws spray, bubbles and sound. It is lively.

The actions are wake, splash and sound, walking the wake, and diving for a panic move. With a dead-slow straight retrieve, stop-and-go and twitches, it is designed to make fish in pressured spots bite with a restrained presentation.

How do the rattlin colors differ?

Colors with "Rattlin" in the name hold several glass rattles. They make noise when you stop and start moving it, alerting fish below the surface.

The 180F's 8 colors are Rankerkiller Gold, Ochiayu Female, Lime Pearl Sand, Gold Rainbow, Onuma Special, Onuma Special Ver. Kirameki, Lime Gold Sand and Matte Lime Chart. Even a color made for the falling ayu season is included, which suits the larger size.

Who are the 110F and 80F for?

The 110F is 110mm, 19.2g and JPY 2,100. It came out in April 2026 and comes in 10 colors, including Rattlin Gold Rainbow, Adel Lime Konoshiro and Midnight Moon. It is a weight that is easy to throw on an ordinary sea bass rod. For a first lure, start here.

The 80F is 80mm and 10.4g and swims at the surface only. It suits days with small baitfish, or anglers quietly working close range inside a harbor.

Things to watch

This part is so-so. At 60.5g it is picky about the rod. Even the 104MB, the Morethan bait rod released in September 2026 that casts the heaviest lures of the line, tops out at 50g.

First check whether the lure weight rating of your rod includes the 60g range. If your rod tops out around 40g, you could take the 140F at 30.5g instead.

At JPY 3,500, it also costs JPY 1,200 more than the 140F, so losing one to a snag or a rock hurts. Where there are many obstacles, decide your casting lines first and you will enjoy using it longer.

Who is it for?

  • Anglers who work the surface for sea bass on big baitfish such as konoshiro and falling ayu
  • Anglers who want to run it on a plain retrieve, throwing a wake and spray
  • Anglers who own a big-bait rod that can cast 60g-class lures

Sea bass rods are collected in our ranking of 9.6ft ML sea bass rods and the Morethan bait (2026) review. Other new releases are in the fishing gear release calendar.
