The Saltiga SJ TG is an inshore jigging rod that handles heavy jigs of 200–400g on its own. If unsure, take the 58B-3. Released in Japan in Sep 2026, list price JPY 77,000–83,000 (excl. tax).

The Gear Nerd's Pick

The core of this rod is the length, stretched from 5 ft 5 in to 5 ft 8 in. Daiwa is aiming at control including the fall. If most of your fishing time is spent dropping heavy jigs, 3 inches matter. So my pick is the versatile 58B-3.

How I judged it

As someone who loves comparing spec sheets, the first thing I looked at was how the weight climbs. From 126g on the 58B-2 to 157g on the 58B-6, it adds only 31g. Very little, while the jig maximum more than doubles, from 300g to 700g.

I hesitated between the 58B-3 and 58B-4. The price gap is JPY 1,000 and the weight differs by only 2g. A close call. The 58B-4, which goes up to 500g, is a strong option too. But the 58B-3, usable from 200g, will see more use on days with lighter jigs. A buy.

How do the 5 models differ? Which to choose?

The difference is the jig weight band. The 58B-2 is a light all-rounder for inshore, the 58B-3 is a versatile model for everything from yellowtail to rockfish, and the 58B-4 is a standard model leaning to power.

  • 58B-2: 150–300g. For anglers using lighter jigs inshore
  • 58B-3 / 58B-4: 200–500g. For a first rod, one of these two
  • 58B-5 / 58B-6: 280–700g. For big fish such as tuna and amberjack, and deep water

Models 5 and 6 are new. Strong. Two powerful rods for power games and mid-deep water were added.

Per gram of rod, where do they differ?

I calculated how heavy a jig each rod handles for its own weight, as "jig maximum ÷ rod weight". 58B-2: 300 ÷ 126 = 2.4g; 58B-4: 500 ÷ 138 = 3.6g; 58B-6: 700 ÷ 157 = 4.5g. Almost double.

The 58B-6 is only 31g heavier than the 58B-2 but handles jigs up to 400g heavier. For anglers who jerk heavy jigs all day, that lightness helps the arm.

How does it differ from the previous model?

Four things changed from the previous Saltiga SJ TG AGS.

  • Length: from 5 ft 5 in to 5 ft 8 in, for better control including the fall
  • Material: Torayca M40X added to the outer layer, aiming for nimble handling and less tip heaviness
  • Guides and fixing: AGS (Type R), plus the first use of the Carbon Wrapping System
  • Lineup: models 5 and 6 added

AGS are guides with a carbon frame, lighter than metal, and Daiwa claims they raise sensitivity. The lighter the tip, the faster it recovers after lifting a heavy jig. This matters.

vs Saltiga SJ and Outrage SJ TG

I lined it up with two Daiwa slow jigging rods whose jig band is close to the 58B-3. The differences are price and length.

Outrage SJ 55B-3 TG1.65m137g200-400gJPY 50,000
As listed on Daiwa's official Japanese page on Oct 17, 2026. List prices excl. tax. All 3 are 1-piece and rated PE #3 max.

The Outrage SJ 55B-3 TG has the same jig band and PE rating and is JPY 28,000 cheaper. That is a lot. The gap is 8cm of length and the SJ TG's build with Torayca M40X in the outer layer. If you choose on price, it is enough.

The Saltiga SJ 61B-3・W is 26g lighter and 12cm longer. Light. But its jig maximum is 330g; to go up to 400g, it is the SJ TG.

Which rod fits you? How I split them

For fishing that drops heavy jigs for a long time, the new SJ TG responds best. The 5 ft 8 in length and the light AGS tip are a really clever build.

  • You use jigs over 300g regularly: SJ TG 58B-3 or 58B-4
  • Mostly around 200g, and rod lightness comes first: Saltiga SJ 61B-3・W
  • You want the same band for less: Outrage SJ 55B-3 TG

In shallow water with light jigs of 100–199g, you could also choose the Saltiga SJ 61B-00 or 61B-0.

Things to watch

This part is so-so. It is 1-piece, so the transport length equals the full 1.73m. Carrying it on a train or plane is hard; it assumes a car or shipping it to the charter boat.

And 1 more thing: price. It starts at JPY 77,000 and the rod alone tops JPY 70,000. Expensive. Even so, this lightness is worth paying for.

Who is the Saltiga SJ TG for?

  • Anglers who use heavy jigs of 200g and up for slow jigging inshore or in deep water
  • Anglers who use a baitcasting reel with PE #2–4
  • Anglers who want rod lightness to make long days easier

How to decide PE size is in How to choose PE line size. Jigging from shore needs a different rod, covered in the shore jigging rod ranking.

For Shimano's slow jigging rod, see the 26 Ocea Jigger ∞ review.

If you mostly use jigs of 100g or less, there are other ways to choose. A 1-piece 1.73m rod is hard to carry on a train.

Release dates for other new gear are in the fishing gear release calendar.
