The Saltiga Bull Chopper is a short jig from Daiwa released in October 2026. It comes in 8 weights from 80 to 260g, at a list price of JPY 1,200–2,450 (excl. tax). A buy if you want the first jig to drop on the day when fishing from a boat.

The Gear Nerd's Pick

The heart of the Bull Chopper is its 55:45 weight balance and the keel on its belly. The posture settles the moment the line goes tight and wobble is held down, so it is easy to keep a steady jerk rhythm. That is why I put it in the box as the first jig for reading the current and the fish.

Key points

  • Released Oct 2026. JPY 1,200–2,450 (excl. tax)
  • Supervised by Kazunari Shimizu. 55:45 balance
  • 8 weights from 80 to 260g. The heavier, the cheaper per gram

When is the Bull Chopper out, and what does it cost?

It goes on sale in October 2026. There are 8 weights: 80g, 100g, 120g, 150g, 180g, 200g, 230g and 260g. List price is JPY 1,200–2,450 (excl. tax), and only the Keimura Full Silver is JPY 150 cheaper.

The "Bull" in the name is the center of a dartboard. It names how easy the jig is to place right where you aim. The material is lead, one piece per pack.

How I judged it

With 30 years of fishing, jigging experience, a boat license and a fishing instructor certification, the first thing I looked at was who supervised it. Kazunari Shimizu built it as a "pilot jig," the jig to drop first when you are putting together that day's fishing.

Next I looked at the weight balance. 55:45. The weight sits just a little forward of center. When the line goes tight the posture stabilizes, the jerk tempo is easy to keep, and it can turn sideways and pause to show itself. It took more than 2 years to refine the balance.

The more you hesitate over what to drop in unfamiliar waters, the more sense it makes to start with this one. That is my judgment. Start with one, and this is it.

As listed on Daiwa's official Japanese page on Oct 18, 2026. List prices exclude tax (except for the Keimura Full Silver color). The 100g is 117mm at JPY 1,300, the 180g is 142mm at JPY 1,850 and the 230g is 153mm at JPY 2,150. Per-gram figures are my own calculation, list price divided by weight.

The heavier it is, the cheaper per gram. The 80g is 1,200 ÷ 80 = JPY 15.0 and the 260g is 2,450 ÷ 260 = about JPY 9.4. The heavy jigs you are most likely to lose on snags hurt your wallet less.

I also checked how the length grows. From 80g to 260g the weight more than triples, but the length goes from 110mm to 159mm, only about 1.4 times. The stubby short-jig shape is kept even as it gets heavier. The shape does not fall apart.

What does the 55:45 balance do?

Where a jig's weight center sits changes how it sinks and moves. The further forward, the faster it sinks head first; the closer to the middle, the more it flutters down level. Simple.

The Bull Chopper sits between the two, placed just slightly forward. The posture settles when the line is tight, and when you slacken it, the round body slips through the water. The keel in the middle of the belly holds down the wobble short jigs tend to have. That is why I call it an all-rounder. A well-made balance.

How do I split use with the Partir Jig Long?

In the same October, Saltiga is also releasing the Partir Jig Long. It comes in 4 weights, 150–220g, at JPY 1,500–2,000 (excl. tax). It is a slim long jig for both spinning and bait tackle, with a thin head to cut water resistance and two flat faces and belly fins that make it fall erratically.

At 150g each, the Bull Chopper is JPY 1,650 and the Partir Jig Long is JPY 1,500. The Bull Chopper is the one to drop first and read the reaction; the Partir adds the erratic movement that makes fish bite. Split them by role and the box stays tidy.

How do I choose a color?

There are 6 colors: Orange, Akakin, Blue Pink and Purple, each in Zebra Glow, plus Zebra Glow itself and Keimura Full Silver. The Orange, Purple and Blue Pink Zebra Glows are "W Glow," combining two glow colors.

The aim is a color to show big fish lurking deep, and the Orange Zebra Glow is described as suiting spots where fish feed on crustaceans. For your first one, start with orange if unsure. The product page photos show deep-water fish such as akamutsu, ara and matodai. A color with a clear purpose.

How do I match the hooks?

The recommended hook changes with weight. 80–100g takes #1–2/0, 150–180g takes #2/0–4/0, and 200–230g takes #2/0–6/0. The 260g takes #3/0–6/0.

The heavier it gets, the bigger the hook it can take. Straightforward here.

Things to watch

This part is so-so. The material is lead, so at the same weight the body is bigger than a tungsten jig. On days with fast current when you want a small silhouette to sink quickly, it is safer to carry a tungsten jig too.

Who is it for?

  • Anglers who want to decide the first jig of the day for boat jigging
  • Anglers who want to search from 80 to 260g with the same shape, changing only the weight
  • Anglers who want to show deep-water fish a glow color

Rods for casting jigs are in our ranking of shore jigging rods, and boat jigging rods in the 26 Saltiga SJ TG review.
