With 30 years of fishing and an instructor's eye for eging and bass, I ranked these on three things: weight, price, and what the upper models add. No. 1 among size 2500 spinning reels is the Daiwa Regalis LT2500D. At 190g it is the second lightest of the seven I read, and its list price of JPY 13,600 (excl. tax) is the lowest. No. 2 is the 200g Shimano Mirabel C3000, out in Sep 2026.

The Gear Nerd's Pick

In this class, paying more doesn't make a reel lighter. What the upper models add is gear durability, water-resistance mechanisms and bearing count, and in more of the pairs the weight actually goes up. So I settle on one reel by weight and price first, and step up only when I can name the mechanism I want.

Skip the reasons and see the gear first ↓

Key points

  • The Regalis LT2500D is 190g, 5g lighter than the Freams one step above
  • Turns to wind 100m are 137.0 at 73cm and 133.3 at 75cm
  • The price of 1g less is JPY 88.6 for the Mirabel and JPY 910 for the Caldia

In size 2500, the JPY 10,000-range Regalis is 5g lighter than the JPY 20,000-range Freams

In Daiwa's official table, the Regalis LT2500D is 190g and the Freams LT2500, 1 step above, is 195g. It was the other way round. The Freams costs JPY 6,600 more (excl. tax).

It is the same at Shimano. The C3000 weights, from cheapest, are the Nasky 235g, Mirabel 200g, Ultegra 220g and Stradic 225g, and they don't line up in price order.

How I chose

What I looked at first was weight and list price. Next I read what the upper models add. What they add is not lightness but gear durability and water-resistance mechanisms.

What I struggled with was the Caldia. At 185g it is the lightest of the six ranked, but its price is 2.15 times the Regalis's. The gap is 5g. So I put the Regalis at No. 1.

I set this order myself from the official numbers, among current models sold on Rakuten.

Figures from each official page on Oct 14, 2026. List prices are makers' suggested prices, all excl. tax. Line retrieve is per handle turn. The size is C3000 for Shimano and LT2500 for Daiwa, and the Regalis is the LT2500D.

Line retrieve is spool diameter times gear ratio

Line retrieve per handle turn is set almost entirely by spool diameter × pi × gear ratio. For the Stradic C3000, 47mm × 3.14 × 5.1 = about 75cm, matching the official 75cm.

The Nasky has a 46.5mm diameter and a 5.0 gear ratio, about 73cm. Daiwa's three pages have no spool diameter column.

Turns to wind 100m, and the price of 1g less

Stradic133.3 turns6/1+JPY 9,100 over the Ultegra5g heavier
Bearings (ball / roller) are from each official page on Oct 14, 2026; the other columns are my own calculations. Turns are 10,000cm ÷ line retrieve. Prices are the gap between list prices excl. tax.

The gap between 73cm and 75cm is 3.7 turns per 100m. Small. If you want fewer turns, high gear is what works. The Stradic C3000XG gives 94cm and 106.4 turns.

The price of 1g less = price gap ÷ weight gap. From the Nasky to the Mirabel it is JPY 3,100 ÷ 35g = JPY 88.6. From the Freams to the Caldia it is JPY 9,100 ÷ 10g = JPY 910, about a tenfold gap.

How many turns high gear saves is decided in how to choose a reel gear ratio, and 2500 versus C3000 in how to choose a reel size, by lining up official numbers.

Why this order

RankModelReason for this rank
No. 1Regalis190g, with the lowest list price of the seven. It is the only one in the top group on both weight and price.
No. 2Mirabel200g is No. 1 of Shimano's 4, but it is 10g heavier than the Regalis and costs JPY 3,700 more.
No. 3Caldia185g and 6 ball bearings are No. 1 in the ranking, but the price of 1g less is JPY 910, about 10 times the Mirabel's.
No. 4FreamsIt has the Mag Shield on the pinion, but is 5g heavier than the Regalis and doesn't reach the Caldia in lightness.
No. 5UltegraThe gear names match the Stradic's, but it is 25g heavier than the Freams in the same price range. A close call with No. 4.
No. 6StradicIt has the thickest explanation of gear durability, but at 225g it is the heaviest in the ranking, and the price is about 1.5 times the Ultegra's.

No. 1: Daiwa Regalis LT2500D

190g is the second lightest of the seven I read. The list price is the lowest. The body and rotor are the same ZAION V (a carbon-blended resin) as the Caldia, which is plainly impressive.

Watch out for water resistance. The Regalis page has no explanation of the Mag Shield (a mechanism that seals water entry with magnetic oil). It suits anglers who want to decide on lightness and price first.

No. 2: Shimano Mirabel C3000

New. A generation that came out in Sep 2026, and the C3000 is 200g, 35g down from the Nasky. The body is CI4+, a carbon-fiber-reinforced resin, and the water protection is X-Protect.

The so-so part is the gear. The Infinity Cross (a tooth design that raises durability) found on the Ultegra and Stradic doesn't appear on the Mirabel page. One for anglers who want lightness from Shimano.

No. 3: Daiwa Caldia LT2500

185g. No. 1 in the ranking. A monocoque body with no body cover, and 6 ball bearings. For density of build, it stands out in this class.

But it is only 10g lighter than the Freams. For buying lightness alone it is expensive, and this part is so-so. It is for anglers who want the precision supporting the gears and the airtightness as well.

No. 4: Daiwa Freams LT2500

A 2026 model. What it adds to the Regalis is the Mag Shield on the pinion and a thinly built Air Drive spool.

Watch out for weight: you pay more and it gets 5g heavier. I don't recommend it to anyone who chooses by lightness. It suits anglers who want a water-resistance mechanism at a price below the Caldia.

No. 5: Shimano Ultegra C3000

The gear is the same as the model above. It gets the same Infinity Cross and Micro Module Gear II as the Stradic, at about 70% of the Stradic's price. The body is CI4+ and the water protection is X-Protect. Judged on what's inside the winding, this one is the better deal.

Watch out for the 220g weight. It is built for fishing where you keep winding at a steady speed on a rotor with moderate inertia. For anglers who put steady winding ahead of lightness.

Shimano Ultegra C3000

Lowest price on Rakuten: JPY 13,800 (as of Oct 14). Some stores go up to JPY 20,071. Prices change daily.

No. 6: Shimano Stradic C3000

Gear durability is about twice that of the conventional design in the maker's standard test, and it has 6 ball bearings. A build meant for long use, the thickest of the six.

But it is heavy. At 225g it is the top figure in the ranking, and the price is almost the same as the Caldia's, so by the numbers this is where it lands. It is the choice of anglers who want to keep the same reel for years.

Lowest price on Rakuten: JPY 22,407 (as of Oct 16). Prices change daily.

For those who want to see the gap to the upper models: I read each one in turn in the Regalis LT2500D review, the 26 Mirabel review and the Stradic review. For the line to wind, see the PE line 0.8 ranking.

Who is it for?

  • Anglers choosing a first reel or a replacement in size 2500 or C3000
  • Anglers who want to choose by the balance of weight and price

If you have no complaints with your current reel, there's no need to rush. The difference in turns is under 4 per 100m.

FAQ

What is the difference between a size 2500 and a C3000 spinning reel?

On Shimano's Ultegra, spool diameter and gear ratio are the same, and line capacity differs. For PE size 1 it is 320m on the 2500 and 400m on the C3000, and weights are 215g and 220g.

What is the difference between max drag and practical drag?

They are different. Shimano's table lists both: the Stradic C3000 has 3.5kg practical and 9kg max. The three Daiwa pages list max drag.

For size 2500, standard gear or high gear?

The Stradic C3000 has a 5.1 gear ratio and 75cm per turn; the C3000HG has 5.8 and 86cm. Weight and list price are the same, so decide by how fast you like to wind.
