With 30 years of fishing, a boat license and a fishing instructor's eye, I ranked these on three things: Sakura Mark and type, weight, and how complete the replacement parts are. No. 1 among waist-belt fishing life jackets is the Bluestorm Re Sober Waist 2.0: about 490g, JPY 19,800 incl. tax, and the product page names the replacement cylinder kit. For a shoulder type at the same price, the Re Sober 2.0 is about 548g.
The Gear Nerd's Pick
An inflatable is a piece of gear whose cylinder and sensor you keep replacing after you buy it. Inside is a CO2 cylinder, not foam. Once it fires or expires, it doesn't go back until you swap in the specified kit. So before the buoyancy number, I check whether the product page names the replacement kit, and I take the Bluestorm, which does.
Key points
- All five are Sakura Mark Type A, with 7.5kg buoyancy for 24 hours or more
- At the same JPY 19,800, the waist belt is 58g lighter than the shoulder type
- Daiwa's DF-2222 is not on the official list; the current waist belt is the DF-2724
The waist-belt staple DF-2222 is no longer on the official list
Daiwa's DF-2222 is often named as a waist-belt staple. When I opened Daiwa's official list on Oct 14, 2026, this model number was not there.
The waist belts listed now are the DF-2724 and DF-2426. The model numbers have changed.
How I chose
I don't look at buoyancy. All five are Sakura Mark Type A with "7.5kg, 24 hours or more," and both automatic and manual inflation. There is no gap.
I compared two things: weight, and whether the product page names the replacement cylinder kit. What I struggled with was whether to put the waist belt or the shoulder type higher. From the same maker at the same price, the waist belt is 58g lighter, so it took No. 1. This ranking covers current models you can buy on Rakuten, and I ordered them by the official numbers.

Life jacket Sakura Mark and the differences between Types A, D, F and G
The Sakura Mark means the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism has confirmed the jacket meets safety standards. Type A can be carried on any small vessel, with buoyancy of 7.5kg or more. Types D, F and G come with conditions on the waters and vessels where they may be used, and G is a buoyancy aid of 5.85kg or more.
Since February 2018 the wearing obligation covers everyone outside the cabin of a small vessel, and a skipper who lets someone go without one gets 2 penalty points. If you board a different boat every time, Type A means never worrying about the waters.
If you use an electric reel on a boat, see the Leo Blitz 500J review and the Seaborg 150J review of the 385g compact electric. If you do fukase fishing from rocky shores, there is also the 26 Tournament ISO LBD review, out in November.
For a winter vest for shore fishing, I also wrote up the foam-filled DF-6326 review.
Prices incl. tax, replacement kits, and the waist-belt vs shoulder gap

|---|---|---|
| Re Sober Waist 2.0 | JPY 19,800 | 16HR 6F KIT |
| Re Sober 2.0 | JPY 19,800 | 16HR 6F KIT |
| DF-2608 | JPY 24,750 | MK5 replacement kit |
| VF-051K | JPY 28,600 | BP-100A |
What I look at is the gap between waist belt and shoulder type. At the same JPY 19,800, the waist-belt Re Sober Waist 2.0 is 58g lighter (548 − 490). That is not a small gap.
Why this order
| Rank | Model | Reason for this rank |
|---|---|---|
| No. 1 | Re Sober Waist 2.0 | About 490g, 58g lighter than No. 2, and the replacement kit is named. |
| No. 2 | Re Sober 2.0 | Same price and kit as No. 1, but 58g heavier. A close call. |
| No. 3 | DF-2724 | Waist 55-140cm is the widest of the 5, but incl. tax it costs JPY 4,950 more than No. 1. |
| No. 4 | DF-2608 | This is the shoulder version with the same price and waist range as No. 3. I put the waist-belt No. 3 higher because it leaves your waist free. |
| No. 5 | VF-053U | A waist belt with a cover about 40% smaller, but at JPY 25,000 excl. tax it is the priciest of the 5. |
| Out of the ranking | VF-051K | The outer cover is washable, but some units are under a recall notice, so I did not rank it. |
No. 1: Bluestorm Re Sober Waist 2.0 (BSJ-5930RS2.0)
About 490g. Light. Even the name and price of the replacement kit are published, so you never wonder what to buy after it fires.
The so-so part is the recommended chest size of up to 100cm. If you wear it over thick winter clothing, check the maximum figure first. One for anglers who want both lightness and a low price.
No. 2: Bluestorm Re Sober 2.0 (BSJ-2930RS2.0)
The shoulder version with the same inflator and the same replacement kit as No. 1. The only difference is weight. If you hang a bag or pliers around your waist, this one doesn't compete for space.
Watch out for color. There are only three, against seven for the waist belt. It suits anglers who want to keep the waist free.

It is wide, and that is its strength. One jacket reaches from slim anglers to over winter layers, well ahead of the other four. It is about 5cm thick when worn, thin enough to walk along a boat's gunwale.
This part is so-so. Incl. tax it costs JPY 4,950 more than No. 1. A 1-jacket pick for people who share one among family or friends, and for larger builds.
Daiwa DF-2724 Inflatable Life Jacket (waist belt)
Lowest price on Rakuten: JPY 15,670 (as of Oct 14). Prices run up to JPY 20,730 depending on the store. Prices change daily. For clothing, compare the maker's size chart (height, chest, waist) with your own measurements. If unsure, check the return and exchange terms on the store page.

It suits shoulder-type fans who want to match everything to Daiwa.

The outer cover is smaller than the earlier compact type, making it about 100g lighter.
This part is so-so. At JPY 25,000 excl. tax it is the priciest of the 5. It suits people who put compactness first.

The outer cover comes off with hook-and-loop fasteners and can be washed. Nice. This is gear that takes sweat and salt.
I did not rank it because Shimano has issued a recall notice for some units made in April 2024 (full black and gray-blue). If you own one, check the serial number on Shimano's official checking page. I have not placed a buy button either.
Replace and inspect the cylinder exactly as the maker explains
Shimano recommends a self-check before each use and an inspection once a year after purchase. Bluestorm's product page says the cylinder needs separate checking "regardless of the indicator color."
The Japan Coast Guard lists three points to inspect: whether the cylinder or bobbin has already been used, whether the body is damaged, and whether any part is past its expiry date. Replacement timing differs by product. Follow the instruction manual.
Which life jacket suits you?
- If you want a light waist and a full day on your feet: No. 1, the Re Sober Waist 2.0
- If you want to wear it over the shoulders: No. 2, the Re Sober 2.0, at the same price
- If you want to wear it over winter layers: No. 3, the DF-2724, with its wide girth
If you want less hassle with yearly inspections and kit swaps, you can also choose a solid-type jacket. For children, choose from the child sizes the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism splits into three by weight.
FAQ
Should I choose a waist-belt or a shoulder-type life jacket for fishing?
For lightness, the waist belt. Of the two Bluestorm models at the same price, the waist belt is 58g lighter.
Is wearing a life jacket mandatory on a mini boat too?
According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, the wearing obligation does not apply to mini boats and the like that need no operator's license. The ministry still recommends wearing one for safety.
How much does it cost to replace the cylinder in a life jacket?
The Bluestorm kit is JPY 3,960, Daiwa's is JPY 4,950 and Shimano's is JPY 4,400 (all incl. tax). Daiwa does not sell the cylinder and cartridge separately, so you replace them as a kit.
Can an inflatable life jacket be reused once it has inflated?
Shimano says that once the inflator has fired, the jacket can't be used until you replace the CO2 cylinder and surrounding parts. The right parts differ by product type.
