Home › Rankings › Best #4 Fluorocarbon Shock Leaders: 5 Picks Compared

With 30 years of fishing, and eging and jigging in the mix, I ranked these on three things: strength (lb), thickness and price per meter. No. 1 is the Shimano Exsence Leader EX Fluoro. In #4, 30m, average 16lb, it is JPY 1,130 (excl. tax), and JPY 37.7 per meter is the cheapest of the four with prices. On strength alone, the 19.5lb Seaguar Grandmax FX is first.

The Gear Nerd's Pick

The fluorocarbon size number is a thickness standard; the maker decides the strength. So even at the same #4 and 0.330mm, the official strength runs from 16lb to 19.5lb. On days I need strength I look at Seaguar's measured strength, but for a consumable I cut and retie every time, I take the Exsence for its lower price per meter.

Skip the reasons and see the gear first ↓

Key points

  • Same #4 and 0.330mm, but official strength runs from 16 to 19.5lb
  • Price per meter runs from JPY 37.7 to JPY 60, a 1.6x gap
  • Daiwa's Fluoro Shock Leader EX came out in Oct 2026

Same 0.330mm, yet 16lb and 19.5lb both exist

I lined up six fluorocarbon shock leaders, mainly 30m spools of #4 (around 16lb). #4 is 0.330mm by standard, and Seaguar and Varivas, which give thickness in mm, also list 0.330mm.

Yet strength runs from 16lb to 19.5lb.

The thickness matches. The strength doesn't.

How I chose

I first looked at how each maker writes the strength figure. Shimano's Exsence says "average strength"; Seaguar says "measured strength", the average of actual straight-pull tests.

Next I divided the list price by length. A leader is a consumable you cut and retie every time it frays, so price per meter matters. What I struggled with was where to put the Grandmax FX, the strongest but open-priced. This ranking covers current models you can buy on Rakuten, and I ordered them by the official numbers.

What to check first on #4 fluorocarbon shock leaders

  • The strength label: average or measured
  • Price per meter. Spools come in 30m and 35m, so divide by length to compare
  • The PE size to pair with. #4 16lb is a thickness whose strength sits alongside PE 0.8-1

Figures from each official page on Oct 14, 2026. Prices are list prices excl. tax. Seaguar and Varivas state a diameter of 0.330mm; the two Shimano lines show #4. Daiwa's two list #4 as a reference next to the 16lb row. Varivas has no size column; its table reads 16lb, 8kg, 0.330mm.

Leader price divided by length and strength

ModelPer meterPer 1lb
Exsence Leader EX FluoroJPY 37.7JPY 70.6
Pitbull Fluoro LeaderJPY 46.7JPY 87.5
Morethan Leader EX II TYPE-FJPY 48.6JPY 106.3
Fluoro Shock Leader EXJPY 60.0JPY 112.5
Both are my own calculations. Per meter = list price ÷ spool length (for example 1,130 ÷ 30 = 37.7); per 1lb = list price ÷ official lb (for example 1,130 ÷ 16 = 70.6). The two open-priced lines can't be calculated.

Per meter, the priciest is 1.6x the cheapest. If you retie 1m every 1 cut, 30 cuts add up to a JPY 670 gap. Not small.

Why this order

RankModelReason for this rank
No. 1Exsence EX FluoroJPY 37.7 per meter is No. 1 cheapest of the 4 with prices, and it even lists average strength in kg.
No. 2Grandmax FX19.5lb is the best of the six, but the open price means no division is possible.
No. 3Pitbull Fluoro LeaderJPY 46.7 per meter, JPY 9 more than No. 1, and no strength label.
No. 4Morethan Leader EX II TYPE-FThe 35m spool gives the most line, No. 1, but per meter it is only JPY 1.9 apart from No. 3.
No. 5Fluoro Shock Leader EXA new line released Oct 2026, but JPY 60 per meter is the highest of the 4.

No. 1 Shimano Exsence Leader EX Fluoro | JPY 37.7 per meter

What decides it is the low price and honest numbers. It lists average strength in both lb and kg, and JPY 1,130 for 30m is a price you can use without hesitation as a consumable. Cheap. Shimano explains it as a two-layer build in which PE bites into the soft outer layer, which raises knot strength.

Watch out for the fact that it is billed as a seabass line. It suits seabass and light shore anglers who want to replace the leader freely.

No. 2 Kureha Seaguar Grandmax FX Shock Leader | 19.5lb at the same thickness

19.5lb at the same 0.330mm. It is the strongest number of the six, and Seaguar states it is the average of measured straight-pull tests, not a guaranteed value. I trust that.

The so-so part is the open price, so you can't compare by division. It suits rough bottoms where you want more strength without going thicker.

No. 3 Shimano Pitbull Fluoro Leader | Single layer and supple

Shimano says the single-layer build with high-purity Japanese fluorocarbon balances strength and suppleness. It is a line meant to be paired with Pitbull PE.

However, the strength column shows only 16lb, with no label for average or maximum. This part is so-so. One for anglers who match everything to Pitbull PE.

No. 4 Daiwa Morethan Leader EX II TYPE-F | 35m spool

The only 35m spool of the six, 5m longer than the others. A welcome 5m. It even lists fluorocarbon's specific gravity of 1.78.

Watch out for JPY 48.6 per meter, which is in nearly the same price range as No. 3. The gap is under JPY 2. It suits anglers who match their seabass gear to Morethan.

No. 5 Daiwa Fluoro Shock Leader EX | New line from Oct 2026

Daiwa's official page gives the release month as Oct 2026. It is just out. A high-strength fluorocarbon chosen from the raw material up, with suppleness tuned for each lb. The target range is wide: eging, shore jigging and light jigging.

The so-so part is JPY 60 per meter, JPY 22.3 more than No. 1. The pick for 1 angler who wants to carry it on a slim spool.

Unranked: Varivas Seabass Shock Leader [Fluorocarbon] | No size column

Varivas says it is a premium fluorocarbon whose low stretch suits bottom lures. On the official page, Kazuharu Asakawa pairs 16lb or 20lb with PE 0.8, and 20lb or 22lb with PE 1.

I left it out of the ranking because the table has no size column and the price is open, so it can't be put on the same yardstick as the other five.

The fluorocarbon size number is a thickness standard, not a strength one

The Japan Fishing Tackle Industry Association standard (JAFS-D1051100) sets nylon, fluorocarbon and polyester sizes by diameter; #4 is 0.330mm. For strength and the like, it says it is left to each company.

So even within Seaguar, the #4 Premium Max is 17.5lb and the Grandmax FX is 19.5lb. PE sizes are set by weight, which is the difference.

Which fluorocarbon leader size to pair with which PE

PE strength also differs by maker, and that is the trap. For 0.8, Shimano's Pitbull 8 is 18.3lb and Daiwa's Dura Sensor X8EX+Si3 is 15lb. A 16lb #4 falls right between them. For a comparison of 0.8 PE lines, see the PE line 0.8 ranking.

At size 1, the Pitbull 8 is 22.4lb and the Dura Sensor is 18lb, a 4.4lb gap at the same size, so the leader to pair is a wide band of #4-6.

For the 12-strand PE to pair with, see the Dura Sensor X12EX+Si3 review.

Who is it for?

  • Anglers pairing #4 fluorocarbon with PE thinner than 1.5
  • Anglers whose leader is running low and who want to choose the next spool

With PE 1.5 or heavier, the strength gap with #4 widens, so a heavier leader is another way to choose.

FAQ

What leader size should I pair with my PE?

Going by the six leaders here and the makers' PE strength figures, #4 is the closest match for PE 0.8, and #4-6 for PE 1.

Are 16lb and #4 the same thing?

They are the same line described with two yardsticks. #4 is thickness (0.330mm); 16lb is strength. Daiwa lists #4 as a reference next to its 16lb row.

What is the difference between fluorocarbon and nylon leaders?

Fluorocarbon has a specific gravity of 1.78 and sinks (Daiwa). Varivas says fluorocarbon stretches less and reacts faster when you work the bottom.
